Five Nelson County High School seniors will be competing in an “Inventor’s Fair,” Thursday, March 11, in the high school media center. The event, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The “Wired65 Inventor’s Fair” is a program targeted at all high school age students, 16 and over, in a 26-county region that includes Nelson. Students in each county compete on a local level with the top three moving on to a regional competition, May 8, at the Louisville Science Center.

The five competitors from NCHS include two teams of two and one individual competitor.

Chaz and Austin will be offering a concept that places a computer display in a pair of eyeglasses.

Competing as an individual, Anthony will be presenting “ASAP, ” a web-based student-testing program he wrote for teachers to use as an assessment tool.

The team of Daniel and Bryan will present their “Shadow Theory” concept, which they say can be used as the basis for multiple inventions. “It can be used for everything from catching criminals to designing public parks,” Bryan said.

Prizes include a small laptop for first place, a Smart 10 notebook for second place and a flip hand held video device for third.

The emphasis for the competition is to focus creativity on new, innovative ideas that are coupled with a conceivable business plan. In addition, projects must be refined with a targeted focus on a priority sector defined through a previous Wired65 study. These areas of focus include health enterprises, life sciences, transportation, distribution and logistics, human resource management, energy technologies, advanced manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and entrepreneurship.

The project is funded through a Wired65 economic development grant awarded to this region. Western Kentucky University oversees the invention portion of this grant.
