Kindergarten, preschool, childcare registration is March 5

Elementary schools in the Nelson County School District have scheduled Friday, March 5 for kindergarten and preschool registration and the submission of preschool and childcare applications for 2010-2011. Parents should call the school in their attendance district for the exact times of registration.

Any child who will be 5 years old by Oct. 1, 2010, may attend kindergarten.

Parents or guardians must submit the following before their children will be placed on a kindergarten class list:

• An official birth certificate from the Office of Vital Statistics. Hospital certificates will not be accepted.
• Proof of a physical examination from a Kentucky physician dated no more than six months prior to the scheduled entry into kindergarten.
• Immunization certificate from a Kentucky physician or health department.
• Proof of an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
• Social Security number.
• Proof of residence in the form of a recent electric or water bill with the current address at which the student resides.

Nelson County provides a tuition free preschool program for all 4-year-old children who are eligible for free lunch, and all 3 and 4-year-old children with developmental delays and disabilities, regardless of income. All free-lunch eligible 4-year-olds must be 4 by Oct. 1, 2010. The district also offers tuition-based preschool for any child age 3 or 4 who does not meet free lunch or disability criteria according to availability at each school.

Preschool applications will be available at each school. Parents will receive information about preschool screening dates and will be provided with a list of all required forms necessary to complete an application for preschool. All parents registering for preschool will be contacted personally to schedule a time for screening. Once a student’s application has been approved for the preschool program, parents must also submit the items listed above. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate with you at the time of registration.

The five childcare programs in Nelson County elementary schools are also having enrollment on March 5. On this day, the $25 registration fee will be waived and tours of the childcare centers will be available. The daycare program is not able to accept children until their third birthday. The district requires that all students eligible for preschool services attend the district preschool program for the half day program. Daycare will be available for the other half of the day at a reduced rate.
