The Yellow Jacket Day Care Center at Boston School has earned a Level Three award through the “Stars for Kids Now” program, Kentucky’s childcare quality rating system.
This is the first center to receive the award in the Nelson County school system, according to district program director Brenda Hickman.
Stars for Kids Now, administered by the Division of Child Care in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, is a voluntary rating system for licensed and certified childcare programs. Programs can earn a one- to four-star rating. Star levels are measurable quality indicators beyond the minimum state requirements, according to a Stars for Kids Now press release.
Star ratings are based on factors associated with good outcomes for young children, such as staff to child ratios, program curriculum and staff education training.
“Children who are cared for in safe, stable and nurturing environments tend to develop effective social skills and are more likely to be well prepared to enter school,” according to information provided by Stars for Kids Now.
The Nelson County District Day Care Program includes five centers, all of which participate in the Star rating system. The Yellow Jacket Center is just the first to receive a three-star rating award and other centers are also on track to receive star upgrades within the next few months, Hickman said.
